The currency used in Northwest is the US dollar, so no currency exchange is needed for travelers from the US. However, it's always a good idea to have some cash on hand for small purchases, tips, or situations where card payments aren't accepted. You can easily withdraw cash from ATMs throughout the region, but be sure to check with your bank for any associated fees. While Northwest is generally a safe region, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions against theft, especially in crowded areas. Consider using a money belt or a secure wallet to keep your valuables safe. You'll also want to make sure you have enough cash for souvenirs and local experiences, as prices can vary depending on the location. For example, if you're planning a trip to a national park or a scenic lookout, you might need cash for entrance fees or parking. It's best to research the specific activities you're interested in and budget accordingly.

Packing for the Seasons in North West

WINTER - December, January, February, (partially) March

Winter is logically the coldest and best time to visit most parts of Northwest (although temperatures in South India are much warmer). Dress so that you feel comfortable with the temperatures, and bring appropriate cold weather clothing for the North (hat, gloves, light jacket or fleece) that matches the activities and altitudes you will experience. The temperatures in the North (Delhi) average between 7°C and 24°C (45°F to 75°F) and in the South (Kochi) between 23°C and 32°C (73°F to 90°F).

SUMMER - (Pre-Monsoon Season) April, May, June

This is by far the hottest time to visit Northwest, and believe it or not, it can be a dangerous time. April and May are the hottest months and can bring interesting weather. In the North, there can be severe storms before the monsoon, bringing hail, and in the summer, the famous Loo winds blow in the North. The extreme heat can lead to heatstroke, and it is advisable never to go out in the midday sun.

Monsoon - July, August, September

As you might guess, the monsoon season is very wet. The monsoon rains are the engine of India's agriculture and therefore a very important, albeit wet, season for the country and its inhabitants. The rain comes from different directions, and in July almost the entire country experiences storms and downpours that can lead to flooding. If you come during the monsoon season, you should bring high-quality rain gear and quick-drying layers. An umbrella and a rain jacket are essential. Waterproof shoes are ideal, but you should avoid shoes that take a long time to dry. The temperatures in the North (Delhi) average between 27°C and 34°C and in the South (Kochi) between 24°C and 29°C.

AUTUMN - (Post-Monsoon Season) October, November

During the Indian autumn, drier and cooler air flows over the Himalayas, clearing the sky and bringing the sun back into play. In this windy season, it is important to dress in layers, as the wind can cause uncertain temperatures in some parts of Northwest. In many areas, there is persistent, dwindling rainfall, so be sure to include rain gear and a windproof umbrella. The temperatures in the North (Delhi) average between 16°C and 32°C (60°F to 90°F) and in the South (Kochi) between 24°C and 31°C (75°F to 88°F).

What NOT to bring to North West

1. Unnecessary Clothing

The Northwest is known for its unpredictable weather, but you don't need to pack for every possible scenario! Focus on layering with versatile pieces like a light jacket, a sweater, and a waterproof outer layer. You can always buy a souvenir hoodie or scarf if you need extra warmth. Remember, you can always do laundry on the road, so don't overpack.

2. Bulky Hiking Boots

While hiking is a popular activity in the Northwest, you don't need heavy-duty boots for every trail. Pack a pair of comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots that can handle both city streets and moderate trails. You can always rent specialized gear for more challenging hikes.

3. Formal Wear

Leave the tuxedos and ball gowns at home! The Northwest is a casual place, even in its cities. Pack comfortable clothes for everyday activities like exploring parks, visiting museums, and enjoying the local food scene. A nice dress or button-down shirt will be more than enough for any fancy dinners you might have.

4. Excessive Electronics

While it's tempting to bring every gadget, remember that you're going to be exploring the beauty of the Northwest. Limit your electronics to the essentials: a phone, camera, and maybe a laptop if you need to work remotely. You'll be surprised how much more present you feel when you're not constantly checking your devices.

5. Unnecessary Cash

Credit cards are widely accepted in the Northwest, so you don't need to carry a lot of cash. However, it's a good idea to have some local currency on hand for smaller purchases and tips. You can always withdraw cash from ATMs if needed.

6. Heavy Guidebooks

Instead of lugging around a heavy guidebook, download a travel app or use your phone to access information on the go. You can also find free maps and brochures at visitor centers and hotels. This way, you can pack lighter and stay organized.

7. Unnecessary Travel Accessories

Do you really need that neck pillow, eye mask, and earplugs? Sometimes, less is more when it comes to travel accessories. Pack only the essentials that you know you'll use. You can always buy something you need on the road if you forget it.
