Delhi Packing List

Delhi! The bustling heart of India, a city that explodes with color, culture, and history. From the majestic Red Fort and the iconic India Gate to the vibrant bazaars of Chandni Chowk and the spiritual serenity of the Lotus Temple, Delhi is a sensory overload in the best way possible. Whether you're strolling through the ancient streets of Old Delhi, exploring the modern cityscape of New Delhi, or indulging in the delicious street food, Delhi offers an unforgettable experience. This Delhi packing list will help you prepare for your adventure. I remember my first trip to Delhi vividly. The chaotic yet captivating energy of the city instantly drew me in. I spent hours getting lost in the labyrinthine alleys of Old Delhi, marveling at the intricate architecture of Jama Masjid and the bustling markets filled with spices, textiles, and trinkets. In New Delhi, I was mesmerized by the grandeur of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India, and the serenity of the Lotus Temple, a stunning architectural masterpiece. A visit to the Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, transported me back in time to the Mughal era. Of course, no trip to Delhi is complete without experiencing the city's culinary delights. From the savory samosas and chaat to the rich butter chicken and biryani, the street food scene in Delhi is a feast for the senses. But before you dive into the vibrant chaos of Delhi, it's important to be prepared. Let's create a packing list that will ensure you have everything you need for a smooth and enjoyable trip!

Toiletries

Toiletries Packing List

Hygiene is important when traveling to Delhi, especially during the hot and humid summer months. While Delhi has improved its sanitation in recent years, it's still wise to be cautious. Public restrooms can be a bit rough, so using the facilities at your hotel or in reputable restaurants is a good idea. Remember to pack your own toilet paper or tissues. Carrying hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes is a must, especially when you're out and about exploring the city. Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating. It's best to drink bottled water, as tap water isn't always safe to consume. When it comes to food, stick to reputable restaurants and avoid street food, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Be mindful of what you eat and drink, as food poisoning is a risk in any travel destination. Don't forget to pack some basic over-the-counter medications, like Pepto-Bismol or Imodium, for any stomach upsets. With a little preparation and awareness, you can have a safe and enjoyable trip to Delhi.

Delhi can be a bit of a shock to the system, especially if you're coming from a cooler climate. The heat and dust can be a challenge, so it's important to stay hydrated and take precautions. Make sure you pack some basic medications like pain relievers, antihistamines for allergies, and antacids for any stomach upset. You should also bring along some rehydration salts, especially if you're planning on doing a lot of sightseeing. Delhi is a big city, so you'll likely be doing a lot of walking. Consider packing some blister plasters and a small first-aid kit with bandages and antiseptic wipes. It's also a good idea to bring along some insect repellent, as mosquitoes can be a bit of a nuisance in the evenings. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, make sure to bring enough medication for the duration of your trip, as well as any prescription documentation. Lastly, don't forget to pack your travel insurance card, just in case you need to see a doctor or have an emergency.

Backpacks & Bags

Bags Packing List

When it comes to bags, a comfortable backpack is a must-have for navigating the bustling streets of New Delhi. Opt for a lightweight yet spacious backpack that can comfortably carry your essentials, including a water bottle and snacks. If you're planning on exploring historical sites like the Red Fort or Qutub Minar, a smaller daypack can be useful for carrying your camera and other belongings. For longer stays, consider bringing a rolling suitcase for your accommodation. This will allow you to pack heavier items and leave them at your hotel while you explore the city. Remember to choose bags that are durable and waterproof, as the weather in New Delhi can be unpredictable, especially during the monsoon season. A sturdy tote bag can also come in handy for carrying shopping bags or souvenirs.

Footwear is key for navigating Delhi's bustling streets and exploring its diverse neighborhoods. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as you'll be doing a lot of exploring on foot. Opt for sturdy sneakers or walking shoes with good support, especially if you plan on visiting historical sites or temples. Flip-flops or sandals are also a good idea for casual wear and for wearing around your hotel or guesthouse. If you're planning on visiting religious sites, make sure to pack footwear that can be easily removed. You may also want to bring a pair of dressier shoes for evenings out or for visiting more formal places. Remember, Delhi is a dusty city, so it's a good idea to bring shoes that you don't mind getting a little dirty. If you're visiting during the monsoon season, make sure your footwear is waterproof or bring an umbrella.

Technical Equipment

Equipment Packing List

Your phone is your constant companion, so don't forget to pack the charger. A power bank is also very useful, as you won't always have access to outlets in Delhi. In many regions, the power supply is irregular, making a power bank a real lifesaver. If you plan to take a lot of photos, definitely bring an extra memory card. A good camera is a must in Delhi to capture the many sights and moments. Don't forget to pack a waterproof case for your phone if you're traveling during the monsoon months. India has many different types of electrical outlets, so an adapter is essential. Check before your trip to see which type of adapter you need. A flashlight is also recommended, as it often gets dark before the sun sets in Delhi. Especially in rural areas, having a flashlight can be very helpful.

Finances Packing List

When it comes to finances, Delhi is a city where you can find something for every budget. While it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand for street food and smaller purchases, most places accept credit cards. You’ll want to make sure your card has no international transaction fees. It’s also a good idea to check with your bank about daily withdrawal limits, as ATMs can sometimes have limits. For safety, it’s best to keep a small amount of cash on you and leave your wallet in a secure place when not in use. Don’t be afraid to haggle in markets and shops, but be respectful and polite. You can also use mobile payment apps like Paytm and Google Pay, which are becoming increasingly popular in Delhi. It’s always a good idea to have a little extra cash on hand for unexpected expenses or emergencies. Just remember to be mindful of your surroundings and keep your valuables safe.

Packing for the Seasons in Delhi

WINTER - December, January, February, (partially) March

Winter is logically the coldest and best time to visit most parts of India (although temperatures in South India are much warmer). Dress so that you feel comfortable with the temperatures, and bring appropriate cold weather clothing for the North (hat, gloves, light jacket or fleece) that matches the activities and altitudes you will experience. The temperatures in the North (Delhi) average between 7°C and 24°C (45°F to 75°F) and in the South (Kochi) between 23°C and 32°C (73°F to 90°F).

SUMMER - (Pre-Monsoon Season) April, May, June

This is by far the hottest time to visit India, and believe it or not, it can be a dangerous time. April and May are the hottest months and can bring interesting weather. In the North, there can be severe storms before the monsoon, bringing hail, and in the summer, the famous Loo winds blow in the North. The extreme heat can lead to heatstroke, and it is advisable never to go out in the midday sun.

SUMMER - (Pre-Monsoon Season) April, May, June

If you are packing for India in the summer, you should carefully research the regions you will visit and stay in. Pack light, quick-drying clothing and items that protect you from the sun while keeping you cool - think long-sleeve linen shirts, high-quality sun hats, linen pants, sunglasses, etc. The temperatures in the North (Delhi) average between 27°C and 39°C (80°F to 102°F) and in the South (Kochi) between 27°C and 32°C (80°F to 90°F).

MONSOON - July, August, September

As you might guess, the monsoon season is very wet. The monsoon rains are the engine of India's agriculture and therefore a very important, albeit wet, season for the country and its inhabitants. The rain comes from different directions, and in July almost the entire country experiences storms and downpours that can lead to flooding. If you come during the monsoon season, you should bring high-quality rain gear and quick-drying layers. An umbrella and a rain jacket are essential. Waterproof shoes are ideal, but you should avoid shoes that take a long time to dry. The temperatures in the North (Delhi) average between 27°C and 34°C and in the South (Kochi) between 24°C and 29°C.

AUTUMN - (Post-Monsoon Season) October, November

During the Indian autumn, drier and cooler air flows over the Himalayas, clearing the sky and bringing the sun back into play. In this windy season, it is important to dress in layers, as the wind can cause uncertain temperatures in some parts of India. In many areas, there is persistent, dwindling rainfall, so be sure to include rain gear and a windproof umbrella. The temperatures in the North (Delhi) average between 16°C and 32°C (60°F to 90°F) and in the South (Kochi) between 24°C and 31°C (75°F to 88°F).

What NOT to bring to Delhi

1. Heavy Winter Clothes

While Delhi can get chilly in the winter months, you won't need your heaviest winter gear. Pack layers instead, as you can always adjust your attire depending on the weather. Remember, Delhi has a dry climate, so you won't need bulky raincoats or waterproof boots.

2. Unnecessary Electronics

Resist the urge to bring every gadget you own. A smartphone, a portable charger, and maybe a camera are enough. Leave your bulky laptop and other electronics at home unless absolutely necessary. You'll be surprised how much freedom you gain by traveling light.

3. Flashy Jewelry

Delhi is a bustling city, and unfortunately, petty theft can be a concern. While you don't need to dress like a pauper, it's best to leave your expensive jewelry at home. Opt for simple, understated pieces instead. Remember, safety first!

4. Large, Unnecessary Bags

You'll be doing a lot of walking in Delhi, so avoid bringing large, bulky bags. A comfortable backpack or a small crossbody bag will be sufficient. You can always store your luggage at your hotel if you need to carry more items.

5. Unnecessary Toiletries

Most toiletries are readily available in Delhi, so there's no need to pack a suitcase full of them. Bring only the essentials, like your toothbrush, toothpaste, and a small bottle of shampoo. You can always buy additional items if needed.

6. Uncomfortable Shoes

Delhi is a city best explored on foot. Pack comfortable walking shoes that you can wear for long periods. Avoid high heels or sandals that might be uncomfortable on uneven surfaces. Your feet will thank you for it!

7. Unfamiliar Currency

While you can exchange currency in Delhi, it's best to avoid bringing large amounts of foreign cash. Instead, use a debit or credit card for most transactions. You can also withdraw local currency from ATMs, which is usually a more convenient option.

8. Unnecessary Guidebooks

With the internet at your fingertips, there's no need to lug around heavy guidebooks. Download a travel app or use your phone to access information about Delhi. You can even find maps, reviews, and recommendations online. This will save you space in your luggage and allow you to stay connected.
