Alright, Ella, you're heading to Germany! That's awesome! You're in for a treat. From the towering Alps to the charming cobblestone streets of medieval towns, Germany offers a fascinating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I remember my first trip there, exploring the vibrant city of Berlin, with its iconic Brandenburg Gate and the poignant remnants of the Berlin Wall. Then, I ventured south to Bavaria, where I hiked through the breathtaking Alps, sampled the local beers at a traditional Oktoberfest, and marveled at the fairytale castles dotting the countryside. Whether you're drawn to the bustling city life, the scenic landscapes, or the rich history, Germany has something to offer everyone. And to ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable trip, this Ella packing list will help you pack everything you need, and maybe even some things you didn't know you needed!

Backpacks & Bags

Bags Packing List

For your trip to Iceland, you'll need a reliable backpack for exploring the country's stunning landscapes. A large trekking backpack with ample storage is recommended, especially if you plan on hiking or camping. Packing cubes are also incredibly useful for organizing your belongings within your backpack or suitcase. They allow you to separate clothes, toiletries, and other essentials, making it easier to find what you need. Consider using compression bags for your winter gear, as they help reduce the volume of bulky items like thermal underwear and thick socks. If you're planning on exploring the cities, a smaller backpack or daypack will be more practical for carrying essentials like your camera, water bottle, and snacks. Make sure your bags are durable and waterproof, as Iceland's weather can be unpredictable. You'll also want to ensure your luggage is comfortable to carry, especially if you'll be walking long distances.

Footwear is crucial for exploring Ella's diverse landscapes. Comfortable hiking boots are a must-have for trekking through the lush green hills and exploring waterfalls. For casual strolls around town, a pair of sneakers or sandals will do the trick. If you plan on visiting the nearby beaches, pack a pair of flip-flops or water shoes for easy access. Remember, Ella's weather can be unpredictable, so consider bringing a waterproof pair of shoes or boots. If you're planning on visiting the tea plantations, a sturdy pair of shoes is recommended as the terrain can be uneven. Since Ella is a popular destination for cycling, consider packing cycling shoes or a pair of comfortable shoes that can be worn with pedals. Remember to break in your shoes before your trip to avoid blisters and discomfort.

Technical Equipment

Equipment Packing List

Your phone is your constant companion, so don't forget to pack the charger. A power bank is also very useful, as you won't always have access to outlets in India. In many regions, the power supply is irregular, making a power bank a real lifesaver. If you plan to take a lot of photos, definitely bring an extra memory card. A good camera is a must in India to capture the many sights and moments. Don't forget to pack a waterproof case for your phone if you're traveling during the monsoon months. India has many different types of electrical outlets, so an adapter is essential. Check before your trip to see which type of adapter you need. A flashlight is also recommended, as it often gets dark before the sun sets in India. Especially in rural areas, having a flashlight can be very helpful.

The currency used in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). You can easily exchange currencies at banks, airports, and exchange bureaus. It’s best to exchange some money before your trip to avoid queues at the airport. However, it’s a good idea to have a debit or credit card for larger purchases and emergencies. Remember, ATMs are widely available throughout the country, so you don't need to carry large amounts of cash. Be aware of the exchange rates and fees associated with your bank or credit card. It’s also a good idea to keep some local currency for smaller purchases, like street food or souvenirs. Don’t forget to check if your bank or credit card provider charges any international transaction fees. It’s a good idea to inform your bank about your travel dates to avoid any issues with your card. When it comes to tipping, it's not mandatory in Sri Lanka, but it's appreciated for good service. A small tip, around 10% of the bill, is customary at restaurants and for tour guides.

Packing for the Seasons in Ella

WINTER - December, January, February, (partially) March

Winter is logically the coldest and best time to visit most parts of India (although temperatures in South India are much warmer). Dress so that you feel comfortable with the temperatures, and bring appropriate cold weather clothing for the North (hat, gloves, light jacket or fleece) that matches the activities and altitudes you will experience. The temperatures in the North (Delhi) average between 7°C and 24°C (45°F to 75°F) and in the South (Kochi) between 23°C and 32°C (73°F to 90°F).

SUMMER - (Pre-Monsoon Season) April, May, June

This is by far the hottest time to visit India, and believe it or not, it can be a dangerous time. April and May are the hottest months and can bring interesting weather. In the North, there can be severe storms before the monsoon, bringing hail, and in the summer, the famous Loo winds blow in the North. The extreme heat can lead to heatstroke, and it is advisable never to go out in the midday sun.

MONSOON - July, August, September

As you might guess, the monsoon season is very wet. The monsoon rains are the engine of India's agriculture and therefore a very important, albeit wet, season for the country and its inhabitants. The rain comes from different directions, and in July almost the entire country experiences storms and downpours that can lead to flooding. If you come during the monsoon season, you should bring high-quality rain gear and quick-drying layers. An umbrella and a rain jacket are essential. Waterproof shoes are ideal, but you should avoid shoes that take a long time to dry.

AUTUMN - (Post-Monsoon Season) October, November

During the Indian autumn, drier and cooler air flows over the Himalayas, clearing the sky and bringing the sun back into play. In this windy season, it is important to dress in layers, as the wind can cause uncertain temperatures in some parts of India. In many areas, there is persistent, dwindling rainfall, so be sure to include rain gear and a windproof umbrella.
